Race to Witch Mountain Overview and Synopsis

For years, stories have circulated about a secret place in the middle of the Nevada desert, known for unexplained phenomena and strange sightings. It is called Witch Mountain, and when a Las Vegas cab driver (Dwayne Johnson) finds two teens with supernatural powers in his cab, he suddenly finds himself in the middle of an adventure he can’t explain. When they discover that the only chance to save the world lies in unraveling the secrets of Witch Mountain, the race begins, as the government, mobsters and even extraterrestrials try to stop them.

Race to Witch Mountain Critic Reviews:

Betsy Sharkey
Here's a tip for parents: If you toss the kids the keys to the spaceship and tell them to "go save Earth," make sure they hook up with former stock car driver Jack Bruno, whose skill behind the wheel will come in handy when they have to outrun the Department of Defense or some other rogue agency of the government. Yes, he's a former felon, and yes, he used to work for the Las Vegas mob, but he's a really nice guy and a lot smarter and more sentimental than the brawn would suggest. Besides, you need a little muscle when you're trying to save the world.

In case you don't live on another planet, hang onto the keys and go with the kids to see Race to Witch Mountain, which is a fast and furious (yes "fast and furious" in that way) wild ride of a movie in which the good guys are good (some of them really, really good), the bad guys are good (very scary good) and the car chases (around a thousand of them by my count, though it was hard to keep track with all the screeching tires and twisted metal) are pretty spectacular.

The film stars Dwayne Johnson -- who still has steel-cut abs and a wingspan that would shame a 747 though he's left his wrestling days as the Rock behind -- as Jack Bruno, the Vegas cab driver who finds himself with a most unusual fare.

Though Jack is, indeed, smarter than you'd think at first glance, he really should have figured out that the teenage siblings who suddenly appear in his back seat have to be from some other world. I mean they aren't surly, there are no piercings, they never ask him to turn on the radio and they have cash. Lots of it. Come on, Jack, pay attention!

Sara and Seth (AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig) do have something in common with teenagers everywhere: They don't trust adults. Only after a few narrow escapes on their way to a little spot of nowhere in the Nevada desert that just happens to have an underground labyrinth filled with mysteriously glowing pods, does Jack Bruno, as Sara calls him, begin to figure out there's more at work here than the outrage of his former mob bosses.

Still, it takes some convincing for Jack to buy into the alien thing. Fortunately Sara can levitate objects and Seth can reach through metal so you know it's more than AP classes that make these kids different. But Jack is a tough guy, trying to remake his life, do the right thing -- getting involved with aliens on the run isn't exactly what he had in mind. But he just can't help himself.

In Johnson's hands, Jack soon becomes a rock with a very soft center, which is probably the most relevant and resonant quality Johnson has as an actor -- that ability to charm everyone around him, bad guys excluded. There are times in "Witch Mountain" when he's being particularly sweet to Sara and Seth in that "Oh ya big lug" way that you can almost hear the audience sigh "ahhhh."

Director Andy Fickman and screenwriters Matt Lopez and Mark Bomback know Johnson's strengths and, well, limitations and play to them here. So there are lots of short one-liners and nearly as many intensely choreographed fight scenes in which Johnson is steamrolling through flanks of assault-rifle-carrying agency operatives (it helps that Seth can stop bullets with his mind, though it takes a lot of concentration to pull that one off) or going up against the towering programmed-to-kill cyborg sent from Sara- and Seth-land to kill them.

And if you think the cyborg is frightening, just look into the cold, dead eyes of Ciarán Hinds' Henry Burke, who's leading the "good" guys as they try to round up the aliens; they must be dissected and studied immediately, it's that important to national security, like we haven't heard that one before. The film also comes with a PG rating that has more earmarks than an Obama budget, a tip-off if there ever was one that the action, violence and fear factors are intense so parents of young kids be prepared.

Robb is exceptional as Sara, delivering the stilted alien-speak lines as if she's been talking that way her entire life. And the chemistry between Robb and Johnson is just short of terrific -- you know Jack would protect Sara with his life and not because he has to.

Fickman has said he wanted to make sure Race to Witch Mountain would be true to the spirit of its ancestors, beginning with 1975's Escape to Witch Mountain. To that end, there are a couple of nice touches for fans of the earlier films, especially cameos by its alien kids now grown older (apparently aging is inevitable no matter which planet you're on).

It happens in a roadside restaurant in a showdown with the feds. Jack, Sara and Seth are surrounded, it looks impossible, and there are no guarantees the three desperadoes will make it out alive, but Kim Richards as their waitress and Iake Eissinmann as Sheriff Antony, are darned sure going to see what they can do about that.

I won't tell you what happens, but just don't be surprised if Sara and Seth show up on Jack Bruno's doorstep again in the not too distant future.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Synopsis:

James Logan aka Wolverine and his brother Victor Creed (who will later become Sabretooth) run away together as children in the mid 1850’s after Logan kills their biological father who had murdered Logan’s adoptive father. After serving together in many wars they are recruited by William Stryker to serve in a special unit made up of mutants. After wiping out an African villiage, Logan quits the unit and goes off to live a life of peace in the Canadian Rockies with his girlfriend later to be known as the Silver Fox.Six years pass for the both of them until Stryker shows up and asks Logan to come back and be a part of a new Weapon X project. Logan refuses but Creed shows up and murders Logan’s girlfriend leaving him wanting revenge against his brother. Logan accepts Strykers offer to be infused with Adamantium so that he can be indestructable and go after his revenge but is double crossed by Stryker and hears him give the order to wipe his memories. Escaping before this can happen, he goes searching for Creed killing anyone who gets in his way. After reuniting with a few members of his old team, he finds out that Stryker and Creed are actually working together to kidnap mutants and keep them in confinement working on a new project, Weapon XI and that only one person knows where their new base of operations is. Remy LeBeau aka Gambit is the only mutant to escape this place and Logan along with John Wraith go searching for him in New Orleans. They find him in a card game where Logan tries to question him but with less than desireable results. After being blasted through a wall by Gambit, Logan sees Creed standing over the dead body of Wraith and the fight is on. Right when Logan is about to get his revenge and kill Creed, Gambit comes flying in with his staff and blows everyone apart. Creed uses this distraction to escape while Logan and Gambit go at it. After showing Gambit the light (with his claws), Gambit agrees to take Logan to Three Mile Island where the facility is … see full synopsis » hidden.Arriving at Three Mile Island by plane, Logan finds many mutant children kept prisoner by Stryker and Creed with the support of the U.S. Government. Logan confronts Stryker while he is at the finishing point of his Weapon XI project and learns the truth that Silver Fox isn’t dead but was keeping and eye on him those six years and manipulating him with her mutant power of persuasion. After leaving, Fox confronts Stryker demanding the release of her sister only to be placated and told to wait. Creed comes in and Fox tries to persuade him that Stryker is only using them. Only this doesn’t work and she is almost killed by Creed. Logan hears her screams and comes to her rescue almost killing Creed but being convinced by Fox that if he does that then they will be no better then Stryker. She also convinces him that she truly loves him.Fox and Logan then go to free the children. Fox leads them out of the facility while Logan goes in search of Stryker. In a firefight, Fox is wounded and sends the children on while she goes back to look for Logan. The children make it out of the facility and are met by none other than Charles Xavier who offers them a ride in his helicopter and protection at his school. While Logan is searching, Stryker activates Weapon XI who is a combination of all the mutants abilities with none of their weaknesses. XI and Logan’s fight ranges from the inside to the outer top of a nuclear reactor and it appears Logan is outmatched until Creed shows up to help save him using the line; “No one is allowed to kill you except me…” Back to back they take on XI together until Creed grabs him by the neck, stabs him in the chest and Logan decapitates him with those claws. XI’s head and body go falling into the reactor cutting chunks out of it the whole way down. Logan tells Creed that this changes nothing and they go their seperate ways. After getting to the ground, Logan is saved from the falling debris of the reactor by Gambit. They then go their seperate ways in search for Stryker but Logan comes upon the wounded body of Fox and starts carrying her toward the plane. Stryker intercepts them and shoots Logan in the head with Adamantium bullets which are the only thing that can really “hurt” him. This knocks him out long enough for him to go after Silver Fox but she turns the tables by touching his ankle and telling him to “walk until you bleed… Then keep walking.”Gambit comes back finding Logan regaining consciousness but without any memories. Finding the body of Silver Fox, Gambit asks if Logan knows her but he doesn’t. Going their seperate ways, the movie ends here but you should watch through the credits all the way. Stryker is picked up by the MP’s with bloody feet for the murder of a general and Logan is last seen in an Asian bar drinking shots and trying to remember who he is.

Perhaps the icon of macho movie stars, and a living legend, Clint Eastwood has become a standard in international cinema. Born in 1930 in San Francisco, the son of a steel worker, Eastwood was a college dropout from Los Angeles College, attempting a business related degree. He found work in such B-films as "Tarantula (1955)", and "Francis in the Navy (1955)" until he got his first breakthrough with the long-running TV series "Rawhide" (1959)". As Rowdy Yates, he made the show his own and became a household name around the country. But Eastwood found even bigger and better things with "Per un pugno di dollari (1964)" ("A Fistful of Dollars"), and "Per qualche dollaro in più (1965)" ("For a Few Dollars More"). But it was the third sequel to "A Fistful of Dollars" where he found one of his trademark roles: "Buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Il (1966)" ("The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"). The movie was a big hit and he became an instant international star. Eastwood got some excellent roles thereafter: "Where Eagles Dare (1968)" found him second fiddle to Richard Burton but to the tune of 800,000 dollars in this classic World War II movie. He also starred in "Coogan's Bluff (1968)", (the loose inspiration to the TV series "McCloud" (1970)") and the unusual but successful "Paint Your Wagon (1969)". In 1970 Eastwood went in an experimental direction again with the offbeat "Kelly's Heroes (1970)", which was yet again a success. 1971 proved to be his best year in films, or at least one of his best. He starred in the thriller "The Play Misty for Me (1971)" and "Beguiled (1971)". But it was his role as the hard edge police inspector in "The Dirty Harry (1971)" that gave Eastwood one of his signature roles and invented the loose-cannon cop genre that has been imitated even to this day. Eastwood still found work in Spaghetti westerns like "High Plains Drifter (1973)", "Joe Kidd (1972)" and "Hang 'Em High (1968)". Eastwood had constant quality films with "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974)" and "Magnum Force (1973)", a sequel to "Dirty Harry (1971)", but 1976 found Eastwood with even more legendary films. The first was "Enforcer, The (1976/I)", often considered to be the best "Dirty Harry" sequel, and "Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)", considered to perhaps be one of the quintessential westerns. As the late seventies approached Eastwood found more solid work in comedies like "The Every Which Way But Loose (1978)" and in thrillers like "Escape from Alcatraz (1979)", but he seemed to have lost his edge in making great films. In the early eighties Eastwood made credible movies with "Honkytonk Man (1982)" and Firefox (1982) (qv), but it was the fourth sequel to 'Dirty Harry', "Sudden Impact (1983)", that made him a viable star for the eighties. At this time Eastwood seemed to be competing with Burt Reynolds as America's top movie star. In the mid-eighties Clint made some solid movies but nothing really stuck out. "Tightrope (1984)", "City Heat (1984)" (with Reynolds), and others were solid but not classic films. In 1988 Eastwood did his fifth and up to this point final "Dirty Harry" movie, "Dead Pool (1988)". Although it was a success overall it did not have the box office punch his previous films had. About this time with outright bombs like "The Rookie (1990)" and "Pink Cadillac (1989)", it was fairly obvious Eastwood's star was declining as it never had before. He then started taking on more personal projects such as directing "Bird (1988)", a biopic of Charlie 'Bird' Parker, and starring in and directing "White Hunter Black Heart (1990)", an uneven, loose biography of John Huston . But Eastwood surprised yet again. First with his western, "The Unforgiven (1992)", which garnered him an Oscar for director, and nomination for best actor. Then he took on the secret service in "In the Line of Fire (1993)", which was a big hit, followed by the interesting but poorly received drama, "Perfect World, A (1993)", with Kevin Costner. Next up was a love story, "Bridges of Madison County (1995)", but it soon became apparent he was going backwards after his brief revival. Since "The Bridges of Madison County," his films have been good but not always successful at the Box Office. Among them were the badly received "True Crime (1999)" and "Blood Work (2002)", and the well-received "Space Cowboys (2000)". But he did have a big success directing "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997)". Eastwood has seven children, has been married twice, and had a long time relationship with frequent co-star Sondra Locke. Although he is aging now, Clint Eastwood has surprised before, and who knows, he may surprise again.

Ancient Relic

STEFFEN VOGT, aged around 25, is helping out at a German archeological excavation in Israel when he finds a 2,000-year-old skeleton holding the instructions for a video camera dating from the year 2003. The bones also show traces of the present day. His theory of a time-traveler who made a video of Jesus is laughed at by everyone, however, including SHARON, an attractive Israeli woman he adores. Although no one appears to believe him, his find certainly seems to have generated interest: Steffen is attacked shortly afterwards in his hotel room by strange men; then he discovers that the German embassy and the secret service are after him; and when his friend DAN is murdered, he goes into hiding. His only true ally is Sharon. Steffen’s theory seems to be correct: financier and time-travel expert KAUN turns up at the excavations in person and carries out several elaborate subterranean measurements at the Wailing Wall # where he believes the camera has been hidden. He is assisted by the head of the excavation, Professor WILFORT. Steffen suspects that Kaun is one of the people hunting for him and remains in hiding. Assisted by Sharon and her jealous boyfriend YEHOSHUA, he manages to steal a letter from the time traveler that contains coded instructions on how to find the video. Before the three of them can set off again in search of the video, Steffen is abducted and tortured. His tormentors # who later turn out to be members of a secret Vatican order led by the unscrupulous SCARFARO # try to blackmail the whereabouts of the Jesus video out of him and then destroy the tape before it gets shown to the public. Steffen manages to escape from them. With Sharon at his side and the murderous churchmen at his heels, he starts a frantic, action-packed hunt for the video. Eventually Steffen and Sharon find what they are looking for, inside an old monastery. Scarfaro has tracked them down, however, and the video falls into his hands. In front of everyone’s astonished gaze he then plays the film # and Steffen suddenly realizes that the biggest adventure of his life has only just begun….
